An organized closet goes a long way toward starting each day on the right foot. A disorganized, messy closet with clothing on the floor spilling out into the room has a lot of downsides and I can’t really think of any upsides.
A disorganized closet has the potential to:
- Make you late when you can’t find something to wear
- Make you feel overwhelmed by how much you have
- Cause stress as you start your day. Who needs stress first thing in the morning?
- Make you feel guilty for the disarray
- Make you feel embarrassed that things have gotten out of control
- Leave you confused about what you have to wear that fits and that you like
I want you to feel in control each day by knowing what you have to wear, knowing what you like to wear and being able to easily pull outfits together. Now, some people are really into simplifying and being minimalist with Project 333. That’s a little bit much even for me, but I invite you read more about it in case it resonates with you.
Most people whom I work with just want to have an organized closet and let the excess clothing go that is no longer serving them due to size and style. Every closet is different and my approach on how to tackle the closet with a client will be different depending on the size of the closet and my client’s goals. But here are some general tips.
Tips for decluttering your closet:
- Create a criteria for yourself by writing down a list of what you want to let to of. Some examples would be letting go of stained clothing, clothing that’s out of style, clothing that doesn’t fit and clothing that was a mistake and you just don’t like it.
- I typically start at the top of the closet and work my way down. But, if the floor is covered and you can’t easily get into the closet, you will have to start with the floor.
- Bring bags or boxes to the area for donations. It doesn’t hurt to bring in a garbage bag as well for clothing beyond repair and garbage like broken clothing hangers and packaging.
- You may want to break the closet down into sections and set a timer to work for a set amount of time versus tackling the whole closet in one shot. This will depend on your closet size, time you have available and your energy levels.
- Make decisions based on the criteria list you made.

Letting go of the excess and using organizing products will go a long way toward keeping your closet organized. But it still takes work on your part. We get busy, we buy new things, our size may change, so we still have to maintain the structure by decluttering again from time-to-time as well as general straightening and restoring order.
Benefits you will enjoy from an organized closet:
- Pulling outfits together quickly and easily
- Wearing clothing you may not have seen or had access to in a long time
- Feeling pulled together each day as you get dressed with ease
- Confidence in your system and how to restore order
- Enjoying your outfits and feeling good when you leave the house
