Results of Taking on Too Much

Taking on Too Much Monika Kristofferson

“Life is a balance of holding onto and letting go.”

Rumi

This can apply to stuff in our homes as well as activities in our days.

What are some of the reasons we may take on too much in our lives and in our schedules?

  • Someone asks us to do something and we automatically say, “yes”
  • We don’t embrace, “No”
  • We feel guilty about saying, “No”
  • We feel like if we say no, no one else will take on the project
  • We love the tasks we’re doing
  • We don’t fully analyze how much time and energy our tasks will take
  • We’re not managing our time effectively
  • We don’t like to have down time but instead like to be on the go all the time
  • We’re avoiding time at home with family

It may be time for you to review and analyze your reasons for what you’ve added to your life. Is it time to make some changes to improve your life balance and quality of life?

Here are some benchmarks that show you may be taking on too much:

Personal care:

  • You’re not getting enough sleep
  • You’re not eating healthy meals & snacks
  • You don’t have enough time for exercise
  • You’re not getting down time to relax

At home:

  • Not enough time to deal with clutter or cleaning
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Forgetting things

In business:

  • You’re not responding to people in a timely manner
  • You’re losing business
  • You appear unreliable
  • You appear scattered
  • You’re not getting critical work done

At home:

  • You don’t have enough time to deal with clutter or cleaning
  • You’re feeling overwhelmed
  • You seem to be forgetting things

Wrap Up:

  • Evaluate whether or not your activities and balance are working for you in a healthy way
  • Evaluate whether or not your balance is working for your family
  • Be prepared to remove some activities or even embrace the word, “no.”

“There’s no such thing as work-life balance. There are work-life choices, and you make them and they have consequences.”

Jack Welch
