Functional Organizing vs. Pinterest

People love to oooh and ahhhhh while on Pinterest as they pin all of the beautiful photos of organized kitchens, pantries and closets. And of course they are picture perfect because it’s Pinterest! The many beautiful, matching, labeled bins and baskets are seductive, serene and calming to the senses. The visual cohesiveness is enough to bring tears to your eyes. Okay, maybe that’s just me. But it does look really, really good!

The reality of working with my clients is that we’re often using things they already have on hand at home or a combination of what they have and a few new things that they purchased after our first appointment. The bins may be mixed and matched. We may come up with a need and my client may run to another room to find something that might work for the space. I may run out to my car and pull something out of my trunk that I already have on hand that I can give to my client.

We’ll declutter the space and then use what we’ve got. Whether it’s a closet or a drawer, the volume of what’s being stored there will be lessened and then we’ll use organizing products to stretch the space, store items of the same type together and label so everyone in the home knows what belongs there.

It may not be perfect and matchy, matchy, but it works, it’s functional and it’s real life. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t have the budget to go out and spend a bunch of money on all new bins or baskets. At the end of the day, if you don’t have too much stuff, you can find what you need and you know where to put it back-you’re doing A-Okay!
